@10 - Paul - his is something we are evaluating now. We cannot provide a date yet.

One of the reason IBM continued to deliver 'Classic' Meetings is to allow customers some flexibility in timing of these sorts of transitions to the newer easier meetings approach. You probably want to let the users that relay on remote control continue to use the classic product while others that do not need this can become the first to make the change immediately to the new meetings.

I have a client that is very upset that ability to give or take remote control of the screen has been quietly removed from the browser client. They rely on it to provide remote user support.
To add an insult to an injury there is verbiage in “Sametime Meetings client comparison” document that is misleading. The line for "Actions for passing control" were incorrectly left behind (confirmed by tech support) in the browser feature column. See SPR WHER86EPQE.

Thank you very much Rob for explaining the compatibility issue.
Moving to standards is always commendable and I appreciate that, but making such a hard cut and let the customer bite the bullet, is imho not the best way to achieve that.
Providing a minimal a/v compatibility with older clients maybe by keeping parts of the old code and using it when communicating with older versions should not be such a big issue and this could have prevented much trouble.
Installation itself is not that problem, but there are always things you can make better.

The AV compatibility issue with older versions of Sametime arises because of the move to SIP standard in 8.5. Prior releases set up calls using a different protocol. The move to SIP is an important move towards the centre of gravity of AV and paves the way for interop with a much larger set of AV systems. We decided we had to bite the bullet and did so in 8.5 ... Hope at least the reasons for the change are now transparent.

Support team is happy to help any customer or partner that needs help with a server installation. Just raise a PMR.

And you still can buy it on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-MS-DOS-Upgrade-5-25-disks/dp/B000FPF1PO :-)

From our perspective, it is horrible. But it is entertaining. I doubt that any IBM commercial on Lotus Notes or even the Lotus Knows campaign will be mentioned in a blog ( or whatever it is called then ) 29 years later.

Correctly, installation is long-winded, but practicable. With some experience, it should not be a problem, but the client thing is not only a problem, it's definitely a no-go for many.

I did a lot of sametime installations ( on Linux ) in the past few weeks to prepare my session on sametime 8.5 for the upcoming AdminCamp in September. I also set up a productive environment with success. I must admit that I did the setup 15 time completely from scratch. It is not easy for an administrator to do the setup. But it is not impossible.
Now that I have the installation documented, I am able to do a setup of all components within one day.
So I would not say that the installation is horrible. I will never understand why you don't see Meeting Server and other components in the System Console, but that is another story.
From what I saw, it is possible for connections ( correct me if I'm wrong)

For all companies (including mine) the client issue is a problem. And as David said, if there are no plans to fix this, it will be an issue for a long period, I assume.

@David:
The ping issue is documented at the IBM Lotus Sametime Wiki.

Unfortunately, I could not find anything about it in the Sametime 8.5 Information Center.

I have a few further point to add to your submission. My company is currently using 8.02 Sametime server, we have the odd 8.5 connect client around. We will not even think of installing 8.5 because of the complexity of the product and the additional heavy infrastructure that you have to have to run it all. Many small companies are using Sametime, but there is not one that would upgrade with all the extra expense that is required.

Why IBM had to make it so difficult and expensive. I am sure that unless they change this companies will not upgrade and then in time move away.

A 2nd point I wish to make is have IBM fixed the horrendous bandwidth requirements that Sametime needs to work with voice, video and screen sharing. Effectively this does not work. You really need to have a dedicated leased line of at least 2 Mb to make it work. How many small business have that? Everyone I know connects to the internet via ADSL.so why does Sametime not FULLY support what most people have?

I would be interested to here other peoples ideas and experience on this.

I think the issues of AV between versions is a significant one but I think customers will need to bite the bullet and move forward. There are no plans, from what I have heard, to change and provide the missing interoperability.

I was curious about your comment regarding ping and LDAP. I believe I am having that problem but cannot find it documented. Could you be so kind to let me know where I can find the information?

I'm sorry to agree with You.
IBM seriously have to to something about the whole installation experience on all their WAS based offerings.
It should be as easy as or easier than installing Lotus Domino 8.5

How it should be:
1) Setup.EXE
2) Acceptt Licences
3) Choose Role/Services
4) Configure LDAP/Directory integration (Just select from a list, no 10000000 choices that doesn't work) and make sure it integrates 100% with AD or Domino Directory without any hassles. Just ask for the Domino Server (IP/DNS) or AD Controller to use and nothing else (unless You select the "Chaos" / Advanced option)
5) Select Destination (C:\ D:\ E:\ etc)
6) Klikk Install on the "Review Configuration" page.
7) Open Services, select "Your Sametime Service" and set it to "Automatic". Then start the Service.
8) Everything works and it only took 30 minutes like a Quick Domino 8.5 install/config does.

Hello,

At my organization we are gearing up to push 8.5.1 too and discovered from IBM this paramater. It seems like we are having the same symptoms, oddly enough after 5 hours of troubleshooting, it looks like this command line only "messes up" one file

depending on where you put your DATA dir:
Lotus\Notes\Data\workspace\.config\rcpinstall.properties

This file is what gets changed "INCORRECTLY" and causes the issues you are talking about, if you just delete this file after running the command line, then notes.exe will launch. The issue I found is that the parameter ${rcp.home} is not getting set in that file and rather looking to a different plugin directory syntax.

I have no clue why this command lines puts it in incorrectly, and a fresh install w/ out that file recreates correctly.

If anyone has any tips, let me know.
